Back in the day, we called a group of people meeting to discuss a common topic Special Interest Groups (SIGs). At least when I was president of the local PC User Group, that’s what we called them.
Of course, that was before the advent of the Internet and multitudinous marketing and get-rich-quick schemes. Things were simpler then. But I guess that’s always true. At any point in time, things that came before were simpler.
But I like it now. I like the fact that there are over 450 meetups in Austin, Tx listed under http://meetup.com/ I like it that I’m leading one (podcasting.meetup.com/92 and austinpodcasters.podomatic.com), supporting friend Wayne Key with (austin7habitsmeetup.com), as well as supporting a blogger’s network with friend, Jan Triplett of the Business Success Center. The last one is announced via EventBrite.com
Just got through listening to Tribes, Seth Godin’s take on this topic. I had read the book awhile back and liked what he said. Then I got the audiobook and got even more from it. I like the ideas but I’m just not comfortable with the name ‘tribes’. Sounds contrived to me. I don’t know if I could seriously promote such a thing.
So, I’m considering forming the WordPress ABC Mastermind group. Hmmm, how does that sound? Not exactly spot on but descriptive nevertheless. I’d like to host a meeting where for the first few sessions, we would concentrate on the ABCs of WordPress. Then we would have a periodic meeting of only those folks who had invested time and efforts to further their understanding and use of WordPress.
Does that sound good to the two or three of you who read this blog? Because of limited space, I will have to restrict membership to the 10 or so folks who can make it to in-person presentations. I intend to hold a formation meeting on April 29th, 2010 at a location to be announced to people interested in this concept. I’ll be sending an email to my lists in the next few days with more details. This will be a ‘by invitation only’ offering. I’ll be looking for participants and action takers only. No bystanders.
